Sails Pearl Beach

Eating and drinking around Pearl Beach

The honest guide to eating near Pearl Beach: no café in the village right now, the coffee van at the hall, the Boathouse at Patonga, Umina and Ettalong.

The outdoor table set for dinner on the deck at Sails Pearl Beach

Start with the fact that every other listing skips: there is currently no café or restaurant in Pearl Beach itself. The beachfront restaurant on Tourmaline Avenue (Pearls on the Beach for twenty years, then Amalfi) was destroyed by fire on 28 December 2024. Its owners reopened at Ettalong Beach within a fortnight and intend to return once the site is rebuilt; check their socials for where they are trading this season. The general store and café on Pearl Parade closed too. Guests who arrive expecting to walk to breakfast are the ones who leave grumpy reviews, so here is the real picture.

In the village

The coffee van at the hall. A coffee van sets up outside the Pearl Beach Memorial Hall on Diamond Road on weekends and through the holidays, with pastries and something for the kids. It is the morning gathering point, and the closest thing the village has to a café at the moment. Over Christmas and New Year a pop-up has run in the old café space.

Your kitchen. Pearl Beach has always been a self-catering place at heart, and the house is built for it: an open-plan kitchen that runs into the dining and living space, a long table, and a backyard where most guests end up eating. Barbecue in the evening, breakfast outside, the lunch that becomes the afternoon.

Patonga, five minutes over the hill

The Boathouse Hotel Patonga. A pub on the sand beside the wharf: beer garden, a seafood-leaning menu, live music on Sunday afternoons, and a kiosk out the front for coffee, breakfast rolls and fish and chips to eat on the beach. It is the natural end to the headland walk from Pearl Beach and the easiest meal in the area. Weekends are busy; book for dinner or go early.

Umina and Ettalong, ten minutes towards Woy Woy

This is where the cafés are.

  • West Street, Umina is the café strip: coffee, bakeries, brunch and takeaway, with the beach and the Coast’s biggest playground at the bottom of the hill. Margarita Daze, above Umina Beach, does seafood, pizza and cocktails with the best view on the peninsula.
  • Ettalong has Lords of Pour for coffee, small bars and restaurants around the waterfront and the markets, and Amalfi, the Pearl Beach restaurant in exile, for pasta and seafood while its home is rebuilt.
  • Ettalong Markets, undercover at 189 Ocean View Road: Saturdays, Sundays and public-holiday Mondays, 9am to 4pm, with food stalls, coffee, live bands on Saturday nights and a cinema in the same complex. The Ettalong Fresh Food Market at the Broken Bay Scout Hall on Picnic Parade runs every Saturday from 7.30am: local growers, honey, bread, flowers, coffee. Do the weekend shop there.

Woy Woy, fifteen minutes

Woy Woy Fishermen’s Wharf. A seafood market, fish-and-chip shop and very casual restaurant on a jetty over Brisbane Water, with pelicans waiting on the rail. Order at the counter, eat on the water. The answer to “let’s just get fish and chips” and to “let’s cook prawns tonight”.

Woy Woy also has a Goan Indian restaurant (Spices 29), a Thai for takeaway night at the house, Greek at Ela Mesa, and Link & Pin, a café by day that turns into a small bar with live music by night.

The occasion dinner

Bells at Killcare. About forty minutes by car, on the Bouddi side of Brisbane Water: a boutique hotel with a serious restaurant, a spa and a garden setting. Pair it with a day walking in Bouddi National Park and it becomes the best day of the trip.

The big shop

Shop on the way in. Umina Beach and Woy Woy both have full supermarkets and are on your route from the M1; there is no supermarket, general store or fuel in Pearl Beach, so arriving with the fridge sorted matters more here than most places. If you are coming by train, Woy Woy’s supermarkets are near the station: shop there and take the taxi from there.
